Zanzibar
Zanzibar -Africa’s Best “one-of-a-kind” location.
Zanzibar is an archipelago consisting of some 25 islands off the east coast of Africa and is a very special place in many respects.
When Europe was still floundering in the dark ages, the Zanzibar Archipelago was a flourishing center for Indian, Arab and African merchants trading goods as far away as China. That diversity and influence is still evident today. Zanzibar was once the center for the slave trade on the east side of Africa, and is still a large exporter of spices although tourism is now the largest segment of the economy.Much of the interaction back in the day took place in historical Stone Town, the ancient portion of what is now Zanzibar City. Stone Town has been designated a World Heritage Site and the town is still a vibrant city of narrow streets winding tightly amongst old homes, schools, mosques, museums, markets, landmarks, ruins, restaurants and shops.The history and way of life here is very foreign to North Americans which is why so many find a visit here so very fascinating.
The other aspect that makes Zanzibar so special are the resorts on the highly regarded white sandy beaches and warm ocean waters surrounding the islands.The beaches on the Zanzibar island are consistently included in the short list on many “best beaches of the world” websites, with the waters around the islands rated as a mecca for deep sea fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving.There are approximately 25 PADI certified diving establishments located on the islands for the beginner, novice and the experienced diver; and lessons are available.
Zanzibar has a mix of festivals ; ruins and museums to visit; restaurants; shopping; and a wide assortment of interesting day and half day tours available. There are a number of unique things to experience which makes Zanzibar the “best one of a kind” destination in Africa.
Generally a tour to Zanzibar includes some time (2-5 days) spent in Stone Town staying at a historical period hotel in the old quarters, followed by some time (2+ days) at one of the beautiful beach resorts. Zanzibar is a fabulous place to visit on its own merits but really fits well with a visit to the game parks and/or a mountain trek.
